Paper Overview
Manufacturing systems can be both extremely valuable and complex at the same time. If they are not chosen and implemented correctly, serious problems can occur, and companies can end up with systems that neither deliver the functionality and user acceptance needed to achieve the business goals they were originally purchased to enable nor the ROI that was expected. Given the amount of risk involved, it makes sense to take steps to ensure that systems will function as expected. In some cases, simulation software is a useful tool for this purpose; the goal of this white paper is to provide an overview of this subject. In this paper, we explain how simulation works in general terms, describe some important features of simulation software that users need to consider, then examine the advantages, disadvantages, and pitfalls of simulation.

Paper Outline

  • Introduction
  • How Simulation Works
  • Choosing Simulation Software
  • Advantages, Disadvantages, and Pitfalls of Simulation
  • The Ten Steps of a Simulation Study
  • Conclusion
