Paper Overview
Over the last twenty years, the American economy has become much more intertwined with the global economy, and government regulatory control has become more stringent. The three major ways that manufacturers can respond to these pressures is by reducing costs, improving productivity, and improving quality. This paper explains how manufacturing companies, paper mills in particular, can take concrete and effective steps to reduce operating costs. The fundamental idea is that information about manufacturing needs to start going to two places. It needs to be put into the hands of decision-makers at all levels of the enterprise, and it needs to be provided to enterprise systems so that it can be used to drive improvements in business practices. EnteGreat author Denise McCarthy describes the key operating costs in paper mills, the role of "manufacturing visibility" in reducing costs, and some pitfalls that paper companies should seek to avoid.
