Paper Overview
Many companies and software suppliers advocate the concept of "Visibility" and Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) to drive continuous improvement and performance management. Manufacturers now have the availability of IT infrastructure and tool sets that can facilitate achieving this vision from the perspective of having the capabilities and technology to deliver it across the enterprise at a lower cost than ever before.

One problem remains, however. Few companies know exactly how to start down the road to making this vision a reality beyond the technical capabilities of their infrastructure or applications. At the end of the day, these tools must be deployed in ways that bring together the people and processes with the technology. This is not an out-of-the-box feature of any software product, but rather a journey that people within manufacturing companies themselves, particularly Operations, at every level, must not only participate in, but drive.

This paper focuses on understanding an approach to Manufacturing Visibility that begins with doing a good job of defining key performance metrics, using them at the right levels, and incorporating root cause analysis to drive both business process and physical process improvements. While examining how companies have used this approach, the paper also discusses what advantages can be realized from it, and specific ways that these initiatives can yield the best financial returns.
