Paper Overview
Many companies currently use Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) to great advantage. These systems assist with both preventative and corrective maintenance tasks and they facilitate the coordination of the Planned Maintenance (PM) schedule with the production schedule. In all of these cases, the CMMS ensures that the right personnel are available at the times needed, whether it is planned and preventative maintenance or emergency and corrective maintenance. However, no maintenance task can be successfully completed, if the needed parts are not available. The inability to have the right part in the right place, at the right time, can undermine the best maintenance programs. The key to avoiding this problem is a function included in some CMMS packages, called the Maintenance, Repair, and Operations (MRO) inventory function. The MRO inventory function not only provides a way of guaranteeing that parts are available when needed, it can also play a significant role in reducing inventory costs, purchasing costs, and costs associated with equipment downtime. The ability of the MRO inventory function to support maintenance in this critical way, and its potential to reduce costs indicate that it should be an integral part of every CMMS package.
