Presentation Overview:
While it may be true that the leading Food, Beverage, and CPG manufacturing companies have taken great strides in improving their overall supply chain performance, there is still important work to be done. Vital opportunities for reducing costs and tightening the supply chain remain. Manufacturers need better demand visibility, so that they are not caught off-guard when rush orders arrive suddenly. They need better production agility, so that they can respond quickly and effectively to these sudden demand shifts. Too much money remains tied up in inventories, too much money is lost with stock outs, and an intensely competitive marketplace puts pressure on every company to consistently find new ways to improve customer service.

In order to respond effectively to these challenges, leading manufacturers are moving beyond the traditional supply paradigm and embracing a demand-driven strategy that combines manufacturing agility with operational excellence. This is called Predictable Manufacturing . Manufacturing agility brings improved speed, greater ease, and increased flexibility to operations, while operational excellence focuses on eliminating waste, reducing variability, improving schedule adherence, securing regulatory compliance, and optimizing cycle times.

The key to Predictable Manufacturing is the integrated use of all ERP systems, manufacturing systems, and automation systems to jointly address these critical business processes:

  • Monitoring performance
  • Executing production orders
  • Scheduling and sequencing shop floor work orders and recipes
  • Integrating business processes with ERP, PLM, and LIMS
  • Managing asset maintenance to ensure equipment reliability
  • Assuring product quality and regulatory compliance
  • Maintaining product genealogy and process traceability
  • Using RFID to facilitate workflow management

When IT tools are used effectively to manage and improve these business processes, the advantages to the business can be immense.

Predictable Manufacturing enables manufacturers to gain measurable results that bring real dollar benefits to the bottom line and competitive advantages to the marketplace. This is reality, not simply theory. Through the pursuit of manufacturing agility and operational excellence, supported by the right investments in information technology, leading manufacturers are making manufacturing substantially more predictable.
