Presentation Overview:
One of the best ways to evaluate manufacturing visibility in your organization is to consider how effectively people in your organization use data to do the following:

  • Call to action - Do alarms alert operators and supervisors to problems? Used correctly, they should provide notifications of the first signs of impending problems, and thus assist in preventing them.
  • Diagnostics - Is data effectively used for spotting trends and finding the root causes of problems?
  • Communications - Is communication promoted that supports the goal of having people throughout the company share a common base for exchanging information?
  • Awareness - Are people enabled so that they can see much more of everything that is going on in all types of manufacturing processes?
  • Performance goals —Do your information systems offer a means to coordinate and support efforts to achieve higher levels of performance?

As Mark Cubine explains, operational visibility is critical to the profitability of today’s manufacturer and brings value to the company in many ways, such as reducing operating costs, providing valuable new or enhanced capabilities, providing or supporting regulatory compliance, and promoting alignment of operations with business goals and metrics.
